Cleansing Ceremony in Kuta

As a part of our involvement in the Media section of the Tribute to Peace and Unity Committee, we were involved in a press conference by Ground Zero in Kuta three weeks after the bombing in October. I took this opportunity to record some photos of the area to help to explain the current sad situation to friends and family that were so worried about us.....

Bomb site rubbleNothing left on the site where the Sari Club once stood, except for the rubble.

Clearing the rubble
The remains of Paddy's Bar - earth-moving equipment is clearing the area of rubble

Wreaths left at the bomb siteLeft: A mountain of wreaths could be found at the site, sent from people from throughout Bali, Indonesia and other parts of the world.

Peace poster near the siteRight: A poster fixed to the entrance of one of the nearby shops.

Damage across from the Sari Club
The building across from the Sari Club, with a banner advertising one of the numerous charity shows now being held in Bali
One of the first volunteers on the sceneOne of the heroes to emerge after the bombing, Haji Bambang was one of the first people on site to assist in the evacuation of bodies. The Australian police on duty at Ground Zero must have had a special respect of him for them to give him a souvenir of one of their hats!
bomb crater
Looking down Legian Road - the crater left from the bomb explosion in front of the Sari Club. The red pillars in the background is Paddy's Bar.

Artwork left after the tragedyRight: One of the numerous artworks being produced spontaneously by artists of the Kuta area as they deal with the tragedy.

Many people have been left unemployedLeft: A man - perhaps one of the staff - sits forlornly on the steps of the Central Kuta shop, just down the road from the Sari Club. All of their heavy curved glass windows were blown out by the bomb

Damaged vehicles some distance from the bomb siteCars in the immediate area of the bomb were totally destroyed. Here are the remains of cars parked further along the street that night.
Some of the saddest news coverage of local victims was that of the funerals of seven taxi drivers from the same small village who were killed in the blast, leaving behind young families to fend for themselves.
