News - Progress of Gallery Construction |

June 2000 NewsletterGallery Progress |
We have been most frustrated with a continual delay on the delivery of roofing tiles for the new gallery. This has been due to an unusually wet ‘dry season’ this year. Normally the rainy season tapers off during the month of March, but this year rain has continued to fall almost daily right through until June. While this has not been much of an impediment for visitors to Bali, in fact keeping temperatures pleasantly cool where we are, these tiles that are only ‘made to order’ have not had the sunlight hours required to dry before being baked in a kiln. As with most building materials made here, roofing tiles are made individually using a hand press, and unless they get the chance to dry off in the sun first, will crack when fired. |

Thus, with the Galungan Festival Season rapidly approaching at the beginning of August, we have now been forced to review our official ‘Grand Opening’ date for the KLUB KOKOS complex. Initially it was hoped that this ceremony would be held at the end of July, on a date decided upon by consulting the Balinese Calendar for a ‘good’ day. Once the time of Galungan arrives, however, no ceremonies of this nature should be held, until such time as the ‘penjor’ (bamboo pole decorating the entrance to every Balinese household) is taken down, marking the end of this festival period. Because this is done 35 days after Galungan, our date for the Opening must now be set at some time after September 6th. However, as the time draws nearer we will be updating you as to its exact date, as well as the elaborate program of events that we will stage in honour of the occasion, involving many people of this community. | |

| Did you know that the Bangkiang Sidem rainfall figures are in our Bali Travel Guidebook? You can see for yourself how wet it has been in Bali. |
For guests staying at KLUB KOKOS there has been a minimum of disturbance due to construction of the gallery in progress. Any work done on building here is done manually, without the use of noisy machinery. We ensure also that any hammering of the odd nail is done well and truly after guests rise from their beauty sleep. But it certainly will be of great benefit to guests once the building has been finally completed, as not only will this house the gallery to display Krishna’s works of art as well as examples of work from many other artists of this area, but we will then also have a children’s activity centre, library area where books, puzzles and games will be available for guests to use, a large open area for use for workshops conducted on site, as well as an area to be set up for guests who wish to have email access while staying with us.
