One of the handiest words to learn is 'Selamat', which by itself means 'safe', but is used in a multitude of greetings. For example:

Selamat pagi = Good morning (till ~ 10am)
Selamat siang = Good day (till ~ 3pm)
Selamat sore = Good afternoon (till dusk)
Selamat malam = Good evening (after dark)
Selamat tidur = Good night, sleep well
Selamat makan = Good eating, enjoy your meal
Selamat minum = Good drinking, cheers
Selamat datang = Welcome
Selamat jalan = Goodbye (to someone leaving)
Selamat tinggal = Goodbye (if you're leaving)
And so the list could go on.

Counting

1/2 = setengah
1 = satu
2 = dua
3 = tiga
4 = empat
5 = lima
6 = enam
7 = tujuh
8 = delapan
9 = sembilan
10 = sepuluh

 

Various places that may be handy to know are...

Di mana .......? = Where is .........?

kantor pos = post office
kantor polisi = police station
toko = shop
bank = bank
kamar saya = my room
WC (way-say) = toilet
kamar mandi = bathroom

 

More Numbers

11 = sebelas
12 = dua belas
13 = tiga belas
18 = delapan belas
20 = dua puluh
21 = dua puluh satu
22 = dua puluh dua
30 = tiga puluh
57 = lima puluh tujuh
100 = seratus
104 = seratus empat
135 = seratus tiga puluh lima
200 = dua ratus
1000 = seribu
2500 = dua ribu lima ratus
10 000 = sepuluh ribu
15 576 = lima belas ribu lima ratus tujuh puluh enam
1 000 000 = satu juta
3 500 000 = tiga juta lima ratus ribu

 

For those of you that want to try a bit of bargaining in another language try these for starters:

Berapa harga? = What's the price?
Terlalu mahal = too expensive
Murah = cheap
Saya tidak mau = I don't want (it)

terima kasih = thank you
kembali = you're welcome (response to thank you)
bagus! = great!
enak = delicious
gula = sugar
susu = milk
air = water
sabun = soap
handuk = towel
teh = tea
kopi = coffee
garam = salt
kertas = paper
rokok = cigarette
as bak = ashtray
korek api = matches
panas = hot
dingin = cold
